We are contestants in the Final Challenge of the Lexus Eco Challenge. For our project, we chose to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution. Our goal was to educate those in our community, and around the world about the plastics that can be found in the everyday products that they use, and how they can eliminate the threat of plastics caused by the cosmetics that they use, often daily. After the plastic in soaps, lotions, or other cosmetics is washed down the drain, it is sent to a sewage treatment plant. This may sound like a good thing, they must be getting filtered out, right? No. Up to 80-90% of the plastics that go through sewage treatment plants end up back in our soil, when the leftover sludge from the treatment is spread as fertilizer.
